EXPLAINER · CHECKED 4 NOVEMBER 2026
What is guided retirement?
A plain-English introduction to the UK’s proposed default pension framework.
Guided Retirement is a proposed framework intended to help people turn defined contribution workplace pension savings into retirement income. The idea is to provide a default route for savers who do not want to make every complex pension decision themselves.
Legal position: The Pension Schemes Act 2026 established core duties; the current consultation concerns their implementation.
Who is it designed for?
The proposals cover trust-based and contract-based workplace pensions. A defined contribution pension builds a pot of money; the income it provides depends on how that pot is used.
Is guided retirement available now?
The November 2026 consultation is an early policy step. It does not mean every provider already offers a new default pension. Check your scheme’s current options before making plans.
What should I do today?
Gather your pension statements, ask your provider about existing retirement choices and consider impartial guidance before withdrawing money.
